Emotionally, I struggled with the mental toll of always being the strong one in my family—hiding my pain and carrying the weight silently. Physically, the changes to my body were frightening. While I’m grateful for life, the scars still hurt, and the loss of a part of me is sometimes heartbreaking. My scars come from a double mastectomy, DIEP flap reconstruction, nipple-sparing surgery, and port catheter insertion. Each one tells a story of survival—but also of pain, grief, and transformation. What I took from ScART is that I’m not alone. I have an entire sisterhood of women who understand the same struggles, thoughts, and fears. They know what it’s like to stand in front of a mirror and barely recognize yourself—yet still choose to keep going. Being allowed to share this journey in a safe, loving space was a blessing. They tell a story. I got these scars throughout my treatments - from my two central lines, many lumbar punctures, biopsies, gallbladder removal and hip surgeries. I painted my scars just as they are on my body. I chose these colors because they represent a light in the darkness. Everything I went though was so difficult at that time, but everything I have been through has made me who I am today and I am proud of that. The dark colors symbolize the beginning of my journey - fear of the unknown and the lighter colors describe the hope I had. I used the gold on my scars to make them stand out and to show that I am proud of my scars. I used to be embarrassed and ashamed of my scars, but now I am proud to have them. They tell my story of what I went through, how far I have come, and everything I have achieved in life. When people ask me now how I got them, I proudly share my story and my testimony. Life became dark—fast. One week after a routine pap exam, I was sitting with a gynecologic oncologist, facing a possible cancer diagnosis. The waiting was excruciating. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"OYPEnA font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"\u003eYellow represents the sickness. After surgery confirmed ovarian cancer, I had to accept the loss of my reproductive organs at age 45. Early menopause was physically and emotionally difficult. My abdominal scar started as a railroad track—rigid and linear—but evolved into a flowing river, free and alive. My breast scars are represented as the sun and the moon. One healed beautifully (the moon); the other (the sun) had many complications, including a skin graft—symbolized by a meteor strike. Mountains and crosses represent the highs and lows of life and my unwavering faith in Jesus. I believe in the power of faith to move mountains.
