About the art and the artist:
Lisa-Jo Mitchell’s story is one of profound endurance, woven through a series of life-altering medical challenges—hysterectomy and oophorectomy, bilateral mastectomy, DIEP flap reconstruction, a perforated colon resection, and multiple skin cancers. Each scar marks a chapter, not just of survival, but of becoming.
In her artwork, Lisa-Jo chose gold to trace her scars, symbolizing healing—not the erasure of what has been, but the honoring of it. To her, these scars are now an intricate part of who she is, where pain has been woven together with strength and courage. Soft, light hues and shades of purple stretch across her canvas, representing the light she continues to move toward—the promise that even after the darkest stretches, there is something brighter ahead. Scattered sparkles catch the eye, small but powerful, symbolizing glimmers of hope as she navigates what she knows is a lifelong health journey.
Through the ScART experience, Lisa-Jo found a deeper connection—not only to herself, but to the women around her. She recognized that while her scars are uniquely her own, they tie her to a sisterhood of strong, resilient women walking similar paths. There was something profoundly moving in hearing others speak with raw honesty and vulnerability, a shared courage that created space for her own.
As she carefully applied white putty over the scars she had sketched, something unexpected happened. It felt as though she was gently tending to parts of herself she had never fully acknowledged. In that quiet, intentional moment, a single tear fell—and with it, years of unspoken, repressed emotion began to lift. What she experienced was more than art; it was release, healing, and grace.
For Lisa-Jo, the workshop became a blessing—a beautiful, transformative experience that allowed her not only to see her journey more clearly, but to feel it, honor it, and begin to heal in a way she hadn’t before.
