About the art and the artist:
Tara Alviano’s story is one of perseverance, love, and learning to face what once felt too heavy to hold. Her body carries the marks of several spine surgeries related to breast cancer, along with two C-sections—and even as she created her artwork, she was preparing for yet another surgery, one she would undergo just days later. Each scar tells a story of endurance, but also of the life she continues to fight for.
In her painting, Tara brought all of these pieces together. She carefully represented the scars from her past surgeries and even included one beyond the outline of her body—a powerful symbol of the procedure that was still ahead of her. Amidst these markings, she painted two flowers to represent her children, and a heart to reflect the deep love she carries for them. They are her reason, her motivation—the force behind her strength to keep going, no matter how difficult the journey becomes.
Through the ScART experience, Tara did something she had never done before: she truly faced her scars and their meaning. It wasn’t easy. The process, both in the homework and in the class itself, was challenging and emotional—but also deeply fulfilling. For the first time, she allowed herself to sit with it all, to acknowledge not just the physical scars, but the weight they carry.
What Tara took away most was a powerful reminder—that healing takes time, and it must go beyond the surface. It’s not just about the scars we can see, but the emotions, the heaviness, and the experiences we carry within. She knows she may not have taken this step without the support of the SheROSE program, and through it, she has begun a deeper kind of healing—one rooted in honesty, strength, and love.
