"My scars are from a double mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction. I began my painting by covering the canvas in pink—my favorite color, a color I’ve always felt embodied me. But after surgery, I didn’t feel pink anymore. I couldn’t explain it, except to say that something felt lost. As I added layers, thinking about my scars, emotions began to shift. Sometimes I’m okay with them; other times, sadness creeps in. But as I painted symbols that reflect who I am, my journey began to emerge. My abdominal scar started as a railroad track—rigid and linear—but evolved into a flowing river, free and alive. My breast scars are represented as the sun and the moon. One healed beautifully (the moon); the other (the sun) had many complications, including a skin graft—symbolized by a meteor strike. Mountains and crosses represent the highs and lows of life and my unwavering faith in Jesus. I believe in the power of faith to move mountains. Flowers reflect my love of plants and natural healing, and the stars, moon, and sun speak to the elements that give us energy, cleansing, and life. After hours of reflection, I knew: this is My Journey."
