About the art and artist:

Beth didn’t come to ScART expecting to uncover anything new. After seven surgeries—two C-sections, a breast reduction, gallbladder removal, gastric bypass, and an elbow repair—she felt like she already knew her body’s story. Her scars had been explained, healed, and accounted for. There wasn’t much left to discover… or so she thought.

But then she stood in front of a blank canvas.

She had an idea going in, something structured and intentional. Yet the moment she picked up the brush, something shifted. The plan faded. The canvas seemed to take over. Inspired by Monet’s soft, dabbing technique, she found herself choosing light colors—unexpected, gentle tones that reflected not pain, but hope. They reminded her of the light at the end of each tunnel she had walked through in her healing.

Without overthinking it, she painted her own silhouette. Her body became the canvas within the canvas—the place where every scar had lived, every battle had been fought. Then she added gold, tracing over the exact locations of her physical scars. Not to hide them, but to highlight them. To honor them. The gold marked them as something meaningful, something worthy of being seen.

Then came the bold, aggressive colors—strong strokes in other areas of her body. These didn’t represent surgeries. These were the emotional scars. The ones no one sees. The ones that don’t come with stitches but still take time to heal. As she stepped back, she realized something quietly profound: some of her scars had healed beautifully, while others were still in the process of healing. And for the first time, that felt okay.

Looking around the room, Beth was struck by the women beside her—her SheROSE sisters. Each canvas told a different story. Different experiences. Different pain. And yet, there was a shared thread connecting all of them. The challenges they faced were incredibly similar, yet deeply personal and unique at the same time. She found herself in awe of their creativity, their bravery, and their hope.

She watched women who didn’t know what they were carrying discover it in real time. She saw others struggle at first, only to emerge with a new sense of confidence. It became clear that something powerful was happening—something that words alone could never quite reach.

In the end, Beth realized that ScART offered something rare. It wasn’t about explaining or analyzing. It was about expressing. It was a way into the inner mind that bypassed language altogether. A way to uncover what had been buried, simply by putting brush to canvas.

And in that quiet, unexpected process, something inside her finally spoke.
