About the art and artist:

Mary Ellen Cimino’s story is one of profound survival, strength, and the deep meaning she has found through it all. After her right breast was removed due to cancer, doctors were unable to use the affected skin, requiring a skin graft—taking a portion from her leg to close the wound where her breast once was. This physical transformation marked not only a battle with cancer, but a daily reminder of what she has endured and overcome.

In her artwork, Mary Ellen chose to center her piece around the symbol of a heart—actually, two hearts. To her, the heart represents life itself; without it, we cannot live. But just as important, she believes that without sharing love, it becomes difficult to truly live. One heart symbolizes her own life, and the other represents the love she gives freely to others—especially those who need help rediscovering love within themselves.

Her choice of colors carries deep personal meaning. Blue and purple reflect a sense of peace that lives within her spirit, while purple also represents her faith and the inner power she leans on when life feels heavy. Orange brings her joy and brightness—a reminder that even after everything, there is still light and happiness to be found. Red symbolizes love in its purest form—love for herself and love to give, which she sees as the most important gift of all. And gold, often associated with wealth, holds a different meaning for her: it represents victory. To Mary Ellen, gold means she is a winner.

Through this experience, she reflects on her journey as an ongoing battle—one she continues to face each day, and one she continues to win. Creating this artwork offered her not just expression, but peace of mind—a place to release fear and set it far away. She encourages others to take part in this kind of healing, believing it can help quiet those fears and replace them with something stronger: love, peace, and the strength to keep moving forward.
