About the art and the artist:
Richelle Conway’s painting tells a powerful story of survival, strength, and healing through the scars she carries both physically and emotionally. She intentionally included the scar from her port and the two scars from her double mastectomy because they represent the battles she fought and the resilience it took to keep moving forward. Though they may not feel beautiful to her, they are powerful symbols of everything she endured and overcame in 2025.
The sea at dawn reflects the peace Richelle longs for and often finds in the ocean, while the deep, dark blues of the water symbolize the moments when that peace feels interrupted by fear, pain, and emotional heaviness. Above it, the coral and red sky represents the anger she still carries, yet the streaks of yellow light breaking through remind her that her inner light has not disappeared. Though cancer changed her, it did not take away her strength or spirit.
The gold woven through the painting represents her scars—marks that may feel out of place, yet remain forever connected to her emotions and her story. They are not just reminders of pain, but proof of survival and growth. Through the ScART experience, Richelle realized that peace and anger can exist together, and that vulnerability is not weakness. Connecting with fellow ScARTists gave her a safe space to express emotions she had long kept inside. What began as something she thought she did not need became a powerful release, helping lift the emotional weight she had been carrying alone. Now, even when tears come, they are no longer only tears of sadness, but also tears of healing, reflection, and strength.
