This beautiful umbrella features original works of art created by participants in You Night’s ScART (Scar + Art) healing program—a powerful experience where survivors turn their scars into sacred, visual stories of resilience.

Each design reflects the strength, beauty, and journey of someone who has faced life-changing challenges, using art as a path to healing.

About the art and the artist:

Ali Wetherbee’s story is layered, complex, and deeply honest—a reflection of both visible and hidden battles. Her body carries the marks of a bilateral mastectomy, drains, an oophorectomy, radiation tattoos, and even stretch marks from childbirth. These are the scars she sees daily, and over time, she has come to view them with a sense of strength and peace. They remind her of what she has endured—and what she continues to carry with grace.

But not all of Ali’s scars are visible. Some remain hidden, even from herself at times, representing deeper physical and emotional wounds—ones tied to pain, shame, fear, and despair. These are the harder truths, the ones that take more courage to face.

In her artwork, Ali brought all of these layers to life. She surrounded each scar with color, allowing emotion to speak where words often fall short—red for intensity and anger, yellow for fear and shame, green for healing and peace, blue for acceptance, purple for pride, and black for the tangled complexity of confusion, fear, and pain. From the darkest cluster of scars, she painted the branches of a tree reaching upward—symbolizing growth, transformation, and a movement toward light, even from the deepest wounds.

As her brush moved across the canvas, her strokes became longer and more fluid, reflecting the reality of living with metastatic cancer. For Ali, this is not a journey with a clear end or resolution—it is ongoing, a daily challenge that touches both body and soul. And yet, even within that uncertainty, there is light. There is hope. The branches continue to grow, drawing strength from the very places that once felt the most broken.

Through the ScART experience, Ali found something unexpected—freedom. What once felt too frightening to face became something she could explore, supported by a community that understood. With each stroke of her brush, she transformed pain into something meaningful, something healing. And in doing so, she created not just art, but a powerful expression of resilience, courage, and the enduring possibility of hope.
