"My scars are from Stage 3C ovarian cancer—from laparoscopic exploratory surgery / full hysterectomy then an open abdominal surgery to remove remaining cancer and finally my chemo port placement. I chose black for the outside of my painting to represent the overwhelming fear that surrounded me when cancer first entered my world. Life became dark—fast. One week after a routine pap exam, I was sitting with a gynecologic oncologist, facing a possible cancer diagnosis. The waiting was excruciating. Yellow represents the sickness. After surgery confirmed ovarian cancer, I had to accept the loss of my reproductive organs at age 45. Early menopause was physically and emotionally difficult. Blue symbolizes the sadness—losing parts of me I wasn’t ready to let go of, and watching the fear in my family’s eyes mirror my own. But I refused to stay stuck. I placed green near my scar to show the growth that’s come from this pain. What I once feared would be an ugly reminder is now a badge of strength and pride. Tears fall from my port scar because chemotherapy was incredibly hard—I felt like I was watching my life from the outside, just going through the motions. Yet scattered throughout my painting is glitter, representing the unexpected gifts cancer gave me: mended relationships, a stronger faith, self-love, and the realization that life is too short to wait. ScART gave me the space I didn’t know I needed. I had been in survival mode, never pausing to process my feelings. This experience helped me feel—and heal. It also reminded me that everyone’s journey with cancer is different, but through empathy, creativity, and community, we find connection. ScART brought us together, and in that sacred space, I found light again."
