My scars are from a mastectomy, hysterectomy, a port, and many emotional wounds that aren't visible. When I first saw my painting, I was surprised—and honestly a little unsettled—by how dark it turned out. But the more I looked at it, the more I realized: it reflects what I’ve been carrying inside. On the outside, I often portray a happy, strong version of myself. But inside, there’s heaviness I rarely acknowledge. This experience helped me shift my perspective. These aren’t marks to be ashamed of—they’re battle scars. Signs of survival. I had never taken time to reflect on them before; I just thought of them as ugly reminders. But now I see them differently. They tell the story of what I’ve endured, what I’ve overcome, and the strength it took to get here. Most importantly, I realized I’m not alone. Hearing other women share how they feel about their own scars reminded me that this journey—though painful—is one many of us walk together. We all carry something. And in that shared experience, there’s healing.This process helped me begin to accept my scars. They are a part of me—and they mean I survived."
